Australia will tackle Sports betting fraud

Delegates from the biggest sports divisions in Australia have agreed to work together to combat illegal gambling and fraud and to protect the integrity of the sport in Australia.

Mark Arbib, the Minister of Sport in Australia has indicated that his regional colleagues agreed that action is needed to combat illegal gambling practices in sport. He said in a statement: “Australia is taking the lead on stamping-out match fixing and illegal betting, much as we have on the international stage with issues like drugs in sport. Australian sports ministers agree that corruption in sport is an emerging and critical issue facing Australian and international sport and we must work together to tackle the issue.”

Arbib said the ministers will support a nationally consistent approach to set up a legalization for gambling to curb illegal betting. He said they will cooperate by exchanging information and developing a better network between authorities, major sports divisions, casino gambling operators and law enforcement and set up a code of conduct for sport. The ministers also agreed to support the global efforts to tackle corruption in sports, including a global rule of conduct and an international organization similar to the World Anti-Doping Authority (WADA).

Arbib said he will contribute the supposed legislation to the International Olympic Committee on March 1. The joint initiative said they have prepared a report to combat problems with casino gambling and sportsbetting.
