“Parkinson’s drug turned me into a gambling addicted transvestite”

A 60-year-old councillor from Hull in the UK received the drug cabergoline in 2001 after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. This drug, however, turned him into a violent drug and gambling addicted transvestite with £ 400,000 debt.

Pete Shepherd was given the new drug by his GP, and the pills helped to relieve the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. But he said it also turned him into an aggressive, sex-addicted gambler with delusions of grandeur who maxed out 15 credit cards, exceeded two bank limits and lost his wife, home and job and dressed up as a woman. He even posed as a millionaire on a cruise once.

Pete said: “I started to develop a series of strange obsessions, compulsions and interests. I became obsessed with gambling, spending money, sexual excess and various fetishes. I suffered from delusions of grandeur, exhibitionism, paranoia and hallucinations and was violent and suicidal. I was on racecourses, in betting shops, casinos and brothels day and night. I developed transvestite tendencies and spend tens of thousands of pounds on women’s clothing for myself.”

In 2001, Pete started with the drug and in the seven years after he built his huge gambling debt by living the good life in the casinos, brothels and phone sex. His life took him to luxurious casino resorts in New York, Florida, Tenerife, Tunisia, Morocco and the Dominican Republic. He said: “Nothing of the high-society life, gambling, sexuality, fetishism, violence or attention-seeking at that time made sense. I knew that I was behaving strangely, but I was totally driven and unable to keep the compulsions under control. It went on and on, and I found myself several times at police stations. ”

Eventually in 2008, Pete saw over the Internet that his strange behaviour was related to his medication. He then stopped to take the drug and his life turned back to normal. Pete got a suspended sentence by Hull Crown Court when a judge accepted that the medication caused his behaviour in November last year.
