888.com surprises Aussies with its telephonic inducements to gamble
The Australian newspaper, The Age, has reported that online casinos based on the other side of the world (naming 888.com), worth billions of dollars are telephoning Australian gamblers and offering them inducements to bet.Â
The practice, believed to be illegal by the newspaper and the territory of Victoria Justice Department, was discovered this week after The Age logged on to several internet poker websites to research online poker.

Less than 24 hours later, one of the sites – Pacific Poker – telephoned, offering money to return and sign up. “We noticed you have tried to log on to our site and been unsuccessful,” the company representative said. “If you would like to come back we can sort out any technical problems and also offer you a bonus.”

The woman said the casino would offer an extra 35 percent on top of any amount deposited in a gambling account.

Internet casinos are forbidden by the Federal Interactive Gambling Act from advertising in Australia or from taking bets from Australians. But despite the laws, Australians continue to bet millions of dollars.

A spokeswoman for the Victorian Department of Justice said it was likely that the telephone approaches were illegal. “Victoria is of the view that the Commonwealth needs to take the lead in this matter,” she said.

Problem gambling experts overstated the case by making the sound-byte comment: “We’ve always known that online gambling is dangerous – you can lose your home without even leaving home.”

NETeller co-founders Stephen Lawrence and John LeFebvre are scheduled to appear in court on Friday, but that doesn’t mean a hearing will take place, said Rebekah Carmichael, a spokesperson for the Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney’s office.
One of three things can happen in the time period between being charged for a crime and being indicted on the charges, Carmichael said. The charged person(s) can be indicted, not indicted, or the decision can be extended.
The NETeller co-founders, who are being charged with a list of crimes that include money laundering, have seen their court date extended twice.
“Essentially it’s a calendar place-holder,” Carmichael said. “It means that one of those three decisions will be made by Friday.”
FBI agents arrested the NETeller co-founders in January on money laundering charges in relation to the e-wallet’s role in transferring U.S. funds with the intent to promote illegal gambling.
Both men have posted bail and are restricted to the Southern District of New York until the matter is settled.

Classes have begun at the rural African school built by popular online casino and mobile slot machine site, Slotland.com. It’s not only changing the lives of the children of Juma, Malawi – the project is now reaching out to bring new hope to surrounding villages as well.
